Collection of best practices - Management of transboundary protected areas in Africa

This compendium captures the lessons learned from an exchange meeting between stakeholders of the transboundary complexes W–Arly–Pendjari (WAP) and the Sangha Tri-national (TNS), organized under the AdaptWAP project. Between the dense forests of Central Africa and the savannas of West Africa, this initiative enabled the sharing of experiences, knowledge, and local practices on common challenges across the African continent.

The document highlights concrete tools and innovative approaches for conservation, socio-economic development, collaborative management, and transboundary cooperation. Through inspiring examples, it aims to promote the preservation of shared ecosystems beyond national borders.

Structured around five thematic areas — natural resource management, institutional arrangements, financing and valorization strategies, security management, and communication — the identified good practices notably include:

• Ecological monitoring using advanced technologies (drones, acoustic tools, telemetry).
• Anti-poaching efforts through joint patrols and transnational intelligence.
• Human–wildlife conflict management through electric fences and deterrent measures (beehives, chili-based repellents).
• Governance and cooperation through shared institutional mechanisms and the involvement of local and Indigenous communities.
• Diversification of financing sources and partnerships.
• Promotion of ecotourism and income-generating activities.
• Regional communication through networks and digital platforms.
