During the first supervision mission of the NB-ITTAS project, a delegation from the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) visited the pilot project intervention sites located in Kandi (Alibori department) in northern Benin. This project, focused on adapting to climate extremes and the integrated management of surface and groundwater resources, aims to showcase best practices in shared groundwater resource management.
The visits enabled the delegation to assess the locations of planned surface water management structures, such as filtration dikes, weirs on watercourses, and drainage channels. Inspections were also conducted to evaluate preparatory work for installing hydraulic infrastructure, including market garden wells and boreholes, which will play a crucial role in supporting agro-silvopastoral activities.
The delegation engaged with local communities to gather their expectations and document their feedback. These testimonials not only facilitated the sharing of best practices in water resource management but also identified how future projects could transform their daily lives. The beneficiaries of training sessions provided feedback on their usefulness, highlighting improvements in agricultural practices, increased yields, and water conservation efforts to combat pollution.
In addition, in-depth discussions were held with senior officials and local authorities, reinforcing an inclusive and participatory approach. These meetings provided an opportunity to explore tailored solutions to regional water resource management challenges while promoting sustainable and resilient practices in the face of climate change.
