Enhancing Resilience of Communities to Climate Change through catchment based integrated management of water & related resources in Uganda – EURECCCA

The EURECCCA project is designed to enhance community resilience to the risks of floods and landslides in the Aswa, Awoja and Maziba catchments and aims to promote integrated, equitable and sustainable management of water and related resources, with the objective of safeguarding livelihoods and ensuring the long-term sustainability of ecosystems.

Beyond water management, the project places strong emphasis on ecosystem resilience, including the protection and sustainable management of forests, wetlands and riverbanks, which act as natural barriers against the impacts of climate change. Agricultural landscapes are also addressed through the promotion of sustainable practices such as water harvesting, soil conservation and flood control, aimed at securing productivity while reducing vulnerability.

The approach further extends to strengthening other community livelihood systems. Support for income-generating activities helps diversify household economies and provides resilient alternatives to cope with climate variability. At the same time, the project invests in building institutional capacities—ranging from extension services and local structures to catchment-level bodies and national institutions—ensuring that communities receive consistent and effective support.

As part of this initiative, a comprehensive planning system that fully integrates climate change considerations is to be established, in addition to the strengthening of ecosystem services provided by forests, wetlands and riverbanks, and the enhancement of the adaptive capacity of communities and stakeholders to better withstand climate impacts.
