Mapping, Evaluation and Management of Transboundary Water Resources in the IGAD Sub-Region | IGAD

The IGAD sub-region covers an area of approximately 5.2 million km2. The IGAD sub-region is arid and semi-arid (about 80%), and sub-humid. It is characterized by periodic droughts, sometimes causing loss of human and animal lives. The estimated population of 206 million in 2010 is expected to reach nearly 460 million inhabitants by 2050. The main socio-economic activities are agriculture, livestock farming, and agro-pastoralism (30-40% of the pastoral population in sub-Saharan Africa).

An initial initiative (2007-2012) identified six watersheds and six transboundary aquifers. Management tools were developed (regional database, GIS, thematic maps, model, etc.). The results contributed to generating a knowledge base and better understanding transboundary water resources, socio-economic, environmental, and institutional aspects of the sub-region related to water resources development.
Management issues related to these surface and groundwater resources, linked to increased water demand, have been highlighted.
Main Objective

The overall objective of the project is to achieve integrated water resources management in the IGAD sub-region with a particular focus on transboundary water resources shared by two or more countries.

The specific objective of the project is to assess the potential of transboundary water resources for socio-economic development (surface and groundwater systems) of the IGAD sub-region and enable member states to engage in the process of integrated transboundary water resources management.
