Great Green Wall: the OSS fully engaged to environmental monitoring and knowledge management

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 11-15, 2026

The Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) contributes to the regional knowledge management, monitoring and evaluation, and communication dynamics of the Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI).

Bringing together several partner institutions involved in the implementation of the Initiative - including national Great Green Wall agencies, the UNCCD, IFAD, CIFOR-ICRAF, UNEP, FAO, and WFP - the coordination frameworks led by the Pan-African Great Green Wall Agency (PAGGW) aim to strengthen the coherence and effectiveness of the Initiative’s monitoring systems, data governance, communication, and knowledge management mechanisms.

Through its participation in thematic sessions and technical exchanges dedicated to the sharing and dissemination of data generated by GGWI monitoring and reporting platforms, as well as to monitoring and evaluation, knowledge management, and resource mobilization, the OSS highlights its experience in monitoring land degradation and promoting sustainable land management across the Great Green Wall region. This contribution builds on the achievements of the BRICKS project, funded by the World Bank (2013-2019), and the GEF-9825 project, supported by the GEF and UNEP since 2020.

These exchanges also provide an opportunity to showcase the OSS platform for the “Integrated Monitoring of Land Degradation and Sustainable Land Management in the Great Green Wall Region.” Developed under the GEF-9825 project, this interoperable platform is recognized as one of the reference tools for monitoring land degradation and assessing the impact of sustainable land management practices across the GGW region.

The platform’s resources and functionalities contribute to strengthening regional mechanisms for monitoring, reporting, and knowledge sharing within the framework of initiatives led by PAGGW.
