The OSS hosted representatives of the Libyan Cereal Production Authority, a key institution supporting the Libyan Ministry of Agriculture in monitoring agricultural seasons. This meeting aimed to discuss prospects for collaboration and capacity building in the use of Earth Observation tools and technologies for agricultural season monitoring in Libya.
The delegation of Libyan experts was received by Mr. Nabil Ben Khatra, OSS Executive Secretary, who praised their commitment and willingness to build their capacities and deepen their knowledge of EO applications, with the aim of effectively contributing to food security in Libya. He also reaffirmed the OSS commitment to supporting them and strengthening synergies between the two institutions, which agreed to consolidate their cooperation to provide innovative geospatial tools and services to address challenges related to the availability of data and information for timely decision-making.
On the sidelines of this visit, the Libyan delegation received training on the use of tools dedicated to agricultural monitoring, including the MISBAR and GUETCROP platforms designed to monitor seasonal agriculture and provide drought early warning. It was also introduced to the use of SAQIYA, a mobile application dedicated to managing irrigation and optimizing agricultural water use. At the end of this training, the Libyan experts recognized the efficiency of these tools and the importance of adapting them to the Libyan agricultural and environmental context. A roadmap will be established for close collaboration to develop specific use cases that meet the needs of Libyan users.
