"Green Corridor in Tunisia", A key tool for land restoration and adaptation to climate change in central Tunisia

Organized by the Ministry of the Environment in partnership with the Sahara and Sahel Observatory on the sidelines of the Regional Conference on ‘’Agroecology: Science and Polic’’, held in Tunis from January 29 to 31, 2025, this side event was dedicated to the "Green Corridor in Tunisia" initiative, which will benefit the most arid regions of Tunisia and which aims to restore 260,000 hectares of degraded land, create green jobs in rural areas, improve the living conditions of local populations and combat the various manifestations of Climate Change. 

Launched by Mr. Hédi CHEBILI, Director General of Environment and Quality of Life at the Ministry of Environment of Tunisia and Mr. Nabil BEN KHATRA, OSS Executive Secretary and, with the participation of decision-makers, representatives of the relevant ministries, representatives of technical and financial partners, as well as actors from the private sector and civil society, this event provided a historical overview of the different green belts and dams initiatives, promoted agroecology, identified the challenges and opportunities for land restoration in Tunisia, and highlighted funding and technical support opportunities.

It was explained that the Green Corridor included five areas of intervention, namely 1) land restoration and sustainable ecosystem management, 2) the improvement of the agricultural systems capacity to cope with climate change, 3) the consolidation of local production chains, 4) the optimization of economic and institutional frameworks for effective governance and 5) capacity building.

Discussions and exchanges were initiated among the participants on innovative approaches and challenges encountered in implementing LDN and on mobilizing the necessary funding to support LDN efforts.
