Strengthening the sustainable management of the Senegalo-Mauritanian Aquifer System to ensure access to water for populations facing climate change - SMAS
The overall objective of the project is to promote cooperation between the countries and build the institutional capacity for the protection and sustainable management of the Senegalo-Mauritanian Transboundary Aquifer System and its related ecosystems shared by four States (The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania and Senegal) in order to improve water and food security and resilience to climate change. To ensure effective cooperation, a Regional Working Group (RWG) has been established and comprises the four states sharing the basin, along with the Senegal River Development Organization (OMVS), the Gambia River Development Organization (OMVG), and the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS). The RWG's mission is to strengthen transboundary cooperation and establish a permanent mechanism for the coordinated management of the SMAS.
