The AdaptWAP project, titled "Integration of Climate Change Adaptation Measures in the Coordinated Management of the Transboundary W-Arly-Pendjari Complex – WAP," dedicates, within its component 3, adaptation measures and actions aimed at maintaining the ecological balance of the WAP complex and improving the resilience capacity of the local population.The main themes on which activities are focused include ecosystems (water, soil, forests, and pastoral ecosystems), common social practices such as transhumance, as well as the improvement of infrastructure for farmers, fishermen, and herders through sylvopastoral and aquacultural management, the promotion of renewable energies, and the creation of a green fund for the diversification of income-generating activities (IGA).
In this perspective, the village of Manga Koira, located in the commune of Kirtachi, recently celebrated a major milestone with the inauguration of a new well. This vital infrastructure, developed as part of the AdaptWAP project, represents a significant improvement for the local population.
Built under the aegis of the General Directorate of Water and Forests (DGEF) of the Ministry of Environment and the Fight against Desertification of Niger, the well offers a precious solution to the considerable challenges related to limited access to drinking water, a situation exacerbated by the effects of climate change in the region.
Construction work began in April 2024 and successfully concluded in June 2024, leading to its official handover to local authorities and the community.
This new well meets a dual need: it provides drinking water to households while offering a valuable resource for watering livestock. This dual functionality is crucial in a region where pastoral activities play a central role in the local economy.
The realization of this project would not have been possible without the active participation of the Manga Koira community members. Their involvement in the planning and construction phases was essential to ensure the well meets their specific needs.
A second well is nearing completion in Koma Bangou in the rural commune of Falmey, demonstrating the ongoing commitment of the AdaptWAP project to improving living conditions and strengthening the resilience of local communities in the face of climate challenges.
