The Sahara and Sahel Observatory will take part in two national GMES workshops in Mauritania on December 16-17-18 and 19, 2024. The first workshop, “From Earth Observation to Decision-Making”, will be organized on December 16-17, by the University of Nouakchott, through the University Center for Mapping and Remote Sensing – CUCT. The second workshop, “Raising awareness among local communities on the use of GMES tools and services”, will take place on December 18-19, and will be organized by the TENMIYA Association.
The first workshop will bring together end users of GMES&Africa services as well as the various Mauritanian stakeholders involved in agricultural monitoring, the fight against land degradation and natural resources management, and will aim to present the tools developed in response to the needs of end users and to involve stakeholders in their operationalization, promotion and popularization.
Participants, end users and stakeholders in Mauritania will have the opportunity to share best practices on the use of EO to support sustainable water and natural resources management.
The second workshop will aim to raise awareness among community representatives and local authorities on better use of the tools and services developed by the GMES North Africa Consortium, through the promotion of Earth Observation, in support of seasonal agriculture and land degradation monitoring.
The tools (MISBAR, MISLAND, GuetCrop) developed by GMES North Africa, will be presented and avenues for improvement will be proposed based on user feedback.
On the sidelines of the two workshops, a field visit will take place on December 20, to agricultural plots in Nouakchott and will allow the regional SAQIYA application to be presented, tested and put into service and adapted to the Mauritanian context.
