OSS Strengthens Climate Adaptation Efforts in Guinea-Bissau, through APICA GNB Project Supervision Mission

The Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) conducted recently a supervision mission in Guinea-Bissau under the framework of the “Adaptation of Agricultural Production in the Coastal Zones of Northwest Guinea-Bissau” (APICA GNB) project. Led by Ms. Khaoula JAOUI, Director of the Climate Department, the mission underscored the critical role of institutional collaboration and community engagement in addressing the nation’s pressing climate challenges.

Receiving the delegation who paid him a courtesy visit, Mr. Variato Luis Soares Cassama, Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change expressed his firm support to the project and his commitment to uniting efforts for its success, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in enhancing the resilience of local communities against climate change impacts, such as rising sea levels, irregular rainfall, and other climate-induced threats.

A key highlight of the mission was the participation in the second Steering Committee meeting, which gathered stakeholders and technical experts from diverse sectors. The meeting made it possible to evaluate ongoing activities, discuss strategic priorities, and align on future actions, making sure the project objectives are fulfilled.

Field visits to the regions of Oio and Cacheu offered the delegation an opportunity to discuss with local communities and the project beneficiaries. These visits provided invaluable insights into the practical impact of the project interventions on climate resilience, fostering dialogue and mutual understanding.

One of the mission’s key points was the assessment of potential sites for the establishment of Observatory Groups and Community Climate Centers as critical hubs for monitoring climate changes and supporting local communities in adopting climate-resilient agricultural techniques.

This mission reaffirms the OSS unwavering commitment to delivering sustainable, tailored climate adaptation solutions. The close collaboration with government authorities, stakeholders, and local populations, aims to optimize the implementation of the APICA GNB project and deliver long-term benefits to vulnerable rural communities.

Funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and executed in partnership with the Government of Guinea-Bissau and Ajuda de Desenvolvimento de Povo para Povo Guinea-Bissau (ADPP-GB), the APICA GNB project keeps enhancing food security, restoring ecosystems and promoting sustainable agriculture. These efforts mark a significant step toward a climate-resilient and secure future for Guinea-Bissau’s coastal regions.
