As part of the Copernicea project, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Sahara and Sahel Observatory, is organizing the second national workshop on Ecosystem Natural Capital Accounting (ENCA), from May 14th to 16th, 2024, in Rabat, Morocco.
This event brings together representatives from various ministerial departments with the aim of mobilizing and strengthening national capacities regarding ENCA issues. It also serves to present and discuss the initial results of the project in Morocco, particularly in terms of Carbon, Water, and Land Cover, while gathering feedback to finalize national ecosystem accounts.
Mrs. Farah Bouqartacha, Head of the Strategy and Sustainable Development Directorate, opened the proceedings by expressing her gratitude to all institutional partners for their contribution to the development of Morocco's ecosystem accounts. She also thanked the AFD and OSS experts for their efforts in achieving these initial results and organizing this workshop. In her opening speech, Mrs. Bouqartacha emphasized the richness and diversity of Moroccan biodiversity as well as the importance of its preservation, warning against its degradation primarily due to the overexploitation of natural resources.
Mrs. Ndeye Fatou Mar, Director of the Land and Biodiversity Department at OSS and Project Leader of Copernicea, underscored the importance of the ENCA methodology for preserving ecosystems and the services they provide to the population. She also praised the strong community created around the Copernicea project by the six member countries, highlighting the tangible results achieved by these countries as well as the numerous national partnerships that have emerged from it.
