The Sahara and Sahel Observatory closes the 30th session of its Executive Board convened in Nouakchott. April 25, 2024

The 30th session of the Sahara and Sahel Observatory Executive Board took place in Nouakchott on April 25, 2024, with the presence of high-level representatives of its member countries and organizations. 

The EB works took place in excellent conditions thanks to the perfect organization coordinated by Mauritania.

Chaired by Dr. Abdalla Zaghloul, representative of H.E. Mr. Al-Sayyed El-Quseir, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the session was marked by the participation of Ms. Lalya Kamara, Minister of the Environment of Mauritania, Ms. Leila Chikhaoui Mahdaoui, Minister of the Environment of Tunisia, Mr. Sam Cheptoris, Minister of Water and the Environment of Uganda and Mr. Abdoulaye Mohamadou, Executive Secretary of CILSS. 

The opening session took place with the presence of Mr. Memme Ould Beibatta, Minister of Agriculture of Mauritania, Mr. Hmeideit Ould Cheine, Minister of Livestock of Mauritania, Mr. Ismail Ould Abdelfattah, Minister of Hydraulics and sanitation of Mauritania and Ms. Fatimetou Mint Abdel Maleck, President of the Nouakchott Region. 

The Board members expressed their appreciation with the results achieved, highlighting the positive momentum taken by the Organization and congratulating the Executive Secretariat for the actions undertaken for a stronger impact on the lives of the populations. 

During this session, Mr. Nabil Ben Khatra was re-appointed Executive Secretary of the OSS for a second four-year term.

Furthermore, the new Auditor and the new members of the Strategic Orientation Committee have been appointed.

The meeting made it possible to review the implementation of the 29th Executive Board session recommendations, to evaluate the 2023 achievements and to approve the 2024 activity program. 

The 2023 financial statements, the Strategic Orientation Committee and the Auditor reports were approved.

At the end of the session, Ms. Leila Chikhaoui Mahdaoui, reaffirmed Tunisia's desire to host the 31st session of the OSS Board as well as the 7th session of its General Assembly, in April 2025.

After the 30th Executive Board session ended, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of the Environment of Mauritania and the Sahara and Sahel Observatory, which came to confirm the commitment of both parties to work together for the best interest of the populations.
