The OSS presents its Documentary Book Project and reaffirms its commitment to combating desertification in Africa at CRIC 21

During the recent meeting of the African Group of Negotiators on Desertification at CRIC 21, the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) presented an overview of its documentary book on land degradation in Africa, currently in the editing process.

OSS Executive Secretary, Mr. Nabil Ben Khatra, highlighted the participatory approach adopted since the inception of the development process, emphasizing the importance of contributions from the African negotiators' group members.

Ms. Malak Chalbi, an environmental expert at OSS, outlined the book's objectives, various aspects it covers, and the issues it addresses. Special attention was given to the updated mapping incorporating high-resolution spatial data, contributing to the understanding of SDG 15.3.1 sub-indicators. This initiative, made possible by the GMES&Africa project, funded by the European Union and coordinated by the African Union, aims to enhance comprehension of land degradation dynamics in Africa.

Ms. Fatou Mar, Coordinator of the Land Department at OSS, underscored the organization's commitment to the participatory book development process, expressing the hope that the African group continues to actively contribute throughout.

Furthermore, OSS raised awareness among participants about the crucial importance of Earth Observation tools in combating land degradation and called for advocacy mechanisms targeting policymakers to strengthen land preservation actions in Africa.

Mr. Khalid Cherki, President of the African group, expressed gratitude to OSS for its sustained commitment to the group's action plan, formulated during the previous meeting in Marrakech. He applauded joint efforts aimed at enhancing collaboration and promoting sustainable solutions to combat desertification in Africa."
