5th Supervision mission EURECCCA project-Leg 2 : Awoja Catchment

mission de supervision du projet EURECCCA

OSS is conducting the fifth supervision mission of the EURECCCA project, May 2022
Second step in Awoja catchment

The second region that the OSS Mission proceeded to was Awoja Catchment, from May 20 to 23. Here the mission led by Mrs Khaoula Jaoui (head of mission) and with support from Steve Muhanji and Aziz Belhamra went to Kween. The mission met the Water and Environment Cooperative (WEC) anchored there. Discussion were held on the establishment and operationalization of the WECs though the communities.

The mission further visited the Aukum hotspot, which is home to the Lake Kyoga, a Ramsar convention site. Flood control structures and diversion canals with the intervention of the EURECCCA project had been constructed to support the affected communities experiencing floods. Retention ponds were also constructed following the project philosophy that are currently used by the pastoralists for their animals, which is a co-benefit of the project.

The team also visited a wood lot in Ongino sub-county where the contracted nursery operator had supplied seedlings directly to the communities. The Grevillea tree species evident and witnessed in the lot as flourishing was highlighted as the most appropriate specie based on the bio-climatic conditions and its high survival rate of 90%. As part of the co-benefits, the woodlot owner indicated his plans to have an apiary as an income-generating activity.

To note, all the communities supported by EURECCCA have quite all achieved their goals and targets and are now venturing into other income generating activities (IGAs) such as animal husbandry, and shea butter processing, by the women groups.
