5th Supervision mission EURECCCA project-Leg 1 : Maziba Catchment

In the framework of the Enhancing Resilience of Communities to Climate Change through Catchment Based Integrated Management of Water and Related Resources (EURECCCA) project in Uganda, the 5th supervision mission is being conducted by OSS where a delegation led by Mrs. Khaoula JAOUI, Coordinator of the Climate Department, travelled to visit the Implementation sites on Monday 16 May 2022 for this purpose.

EURECCCA is a project financed by the Adaptation Fund (AF). It falls under the water management sector, and has the overall objective of increasing the resilience of communities to the risks of floods and landslides in the catchment areas of Awoja, Aswa and Maziba by promoting the integrated, equitable and sustainable management of these catchments and associated resources.

The mission commenced by conducting monitoring and evaluation of selected project intervention sites in Maziba, Victoria Water Management Zone. This was done to take stock of the results achieved and to collect the needs and feedback of the beneficiaries on the impact of the various activities.
The sites visited and meetings conducted during the three days included:

  • The wetlands of Rufuha and Kabasheshe and meeting with the established Water and Environment Cooperative (WEC) ;
  • The Fruitful Nature Tree nursery in the village of Kekubo Karujabura;
  • The Water and Soil Conservation works (gabions, terraces...) in Kirembe and Nyamurindira villages;
  • The plantations and woodlots in Kirembe;
  • The KWID women's group for cook stoves and women empowerment.

As a major achievement of the EURECCCA Project, the Rufuha wetland has been completely regenerated and restored as well as the communities living around it who are now engaging in Income generating Activities (IGA).

This first stage ended with a debriefing session of the main recommendations and conclusions drawn from these different visits.

The team is currently headed to the Aswa catchment to continue with the next step of the mission.
